چکیده

This paper develops a multi-criteria methodology to simulate irrigation water markets at basin level. For this purpose it is assumed that irrigators try to optimise personal multiattribute utility functions via their productive decision making process (crop mix), subject to a set of constraints based upon the structural features of their farms. In this sense, farmers with homogeneous behaviour regarding water use have been grouped, such groups being established as “types” to be considered in the whole water market simulation model. This model calculates the equilibrium through a solution that maximises aggregate welfare, which is quantified as the sum of the multi-attribute utilities reached by each of the participating agents. This methodology has been empirically applied for the Duero Basin (Northern Spain), finding that the implementation of this institution would increase economic efficiency and agricultural labour demand, particularly during droughts.

Integrated Evaluation of Increasing Irrigation Efficiency and Reducing Discharge Impacts on Hydropower Generation of Basin Water Resources System(Case Study: Dez Irrigation Network – Dez Dam)

World electricity production today is heavily dependent on water resources. Studies have shown that global warming and climate changes will have significant impacts on available water resources to produce hydroelectric power. Considering that the reservoir dam in the catchment area of Dez is simultaneously a producer of hydropower and supplier of water needed for agricultural land, the aim of t...

Towards integrated modelling in the Murray-Darling Basin

The Murray-Darling Basin is characterised by low but highly variable rainfall and surface runoff and a high level of surface water use. Regulation has altered the stream flow pattern dramatically, affecting river dependent ecosystems. Responsibility for land and water management is fragmented, producing varying (and sometimes disparate) policies, management, and modelling approaches. The Murray...

Basin Irrigation Design with Multi-Criteria Analysis Focusing on Water Saving and Economic Returns: Application to Wheat in Hetao, Yellow River Basin

The sustainability of the Hetao Irrigation System, located in the water scarce upper Yellow River basin, is a priority considering the need for water saving, increased water productivity, and higher farmers’ incomes. The upgrading of basin irrigation, the main irrigation method, is essential and includes the adoption of precise land levelling, cut-off management, improved water distribution uni...

Modelling irrigation scheduling to analyse water management at farm level, during water shortages

The area under irrigated corn has significantly increased in the Charente river basin during the last 10 years. Corn water requirements are maximum in the summer, the period with low water flows and highest environmental vulnerability. Periods of water shortage during which irrigation is temporarily forbidden occur frequently. To reduce water demand, specific water saving policies are required....

An Integrated Analysis of the Effect of Irrigation Efficiency Improvement on the Reliability and Vulnerability of Water Resources System with Regard to Discharge Fluctuations (A Case Study: Dez Basin)

Integrated simulation of water resources systems is an efficient tool to evaluate and adopt various options in macro-policies and decision-making procedures that are in line with the sustainable development of drainage basins. One of the drainage basin management policies is to enhance the efficiency of agricultural land use. Considering the complicated function of the drainage basin elements a...
